Is Charlottesville a “Safe City?” The Answer May Surprise You

Many locals tend to think about Albemarle county and the city of Charlottesville as among the top places to live within the state of Virginia. A vibrant local economy, the prestigious University of Virginia, and a lot of the amenities around town give Charlottesville an air of sophistication and old world charm.

Now, one study from a home security company is suggesting that Charlottesville is not on the short list of communities most comprehensively protected from different kinds of residential crime.

On March 19, the Newsplex site reported on a study by the company Safe Wise that finds many Northern Virginia communities score higher than Charlottesville on the safety meter.

Methodology

The report does not really go into great detail about the study’s metrics, though it does say the report is based on statistical crime rates. The case could be made that even though Charlottesville did not score near the top, it may still be a place that many reasonable people would consider relatively safe. For instance, while stronger policing in the specific Northern Virginia neighborhoods like Fairfax may result in fewer burglaries or home invasions, more violent crime could be happening outside of the boundaries of what is being surveyed.

However, the report does show a need for community policing, cited in a quote by Albemarle county police chief Steve Sellers, who goes into some of the dichotomy about whether a big-city atmosphere in Fairfax and Arlington is objectively more safe than a Central Virginia town like Charlottesville.

Looking at Crime and Personal Injury in Virginia

The bottom line is that unfortunately, no area is completely safe, and that regardless of some of the statistics, law enforcement and public officials still need to work on effectively promoting public health and safety in a variety of ways.

In Charlottesville, Virginia personal injury lawyers and other local legal professionals will have an understanding of how this works as they deal with the claims of those injured in criminal activities, traffic accidents, workplace accidents and all other kinds of situations where their clients may have legal recourse to address negligence or lack of public safety efforts.

Virginia personal injury lawyers apply specific federal, state and local law and case precedent to the claims of their clients, in order to help them get compensation for the cost of care recovery, and more, including lost wages.
