New reports from local broadcasts and newspapers show that in many ways, the business community in Charlottesville, Virginia is growing.
One example is Daily Progress reporting from February that goes into the story of some experienced finance professionals who are choosing to forego big firm, big-city work, in order to set up smaller shops in places just like Charlottesville.
The story cites Eric Kallen and Court Nexsen, two of five professionals opening up a money management business called Hayek Kallen Investment Management in the area. Nexsen is quoted in the article, talking about how he has chosen to open up his own small business in a small community, after previously working for Goldman Sachs in New York. Some of what this report talks about, including the ‘human connections’ among smaller local businesses, is a commonly valued part of why people choose to build smaller, and separate themselves from the larger corporate experience.
But other issues are also hinted at in this story, which include the somewhat less covered idea that, while some larger city economies are imploding (see the Detroit bankruptcy), some other smaller cities are experiencing a lot of growth. This is especially true in places like Charlottesville, where residents may be moving in from smaller rural communities on the fringes of Virginia’s isolated area, or from big northern cities like New York.
