It’s official — the John W. Warner Parkway, adding a travel path between downtown Charlottesville and areas to the north, is now open to traffic off of the U.S. 250 bypass. The road allows travelers to go from the McIntire Road interchange north to the east of Charlottesville High School, through areas of McIntire Park, meeting up with Rio Road to the north.
Reports last month in the Daily Progress showed Charlottesville city manager Maurice Jones and others praising the new traffic arrangement, saying that it will help with traffic flow and give motorists better access to central parts of the Charlottesville area. Charlottesville’s regional Chamber of Commerce President Timothy Hulbert describes it as “a beautiful gateway into a vibrant downtown.”
Reports also show this project had been in the works since 1967 and took roughly $20 million to install.
Safety Additions
Coverage of the project also shows planners added an overpass, as well as bike lanes and other safety additions. New traffic lights were put in to handle new traffic flows. These are very important and fundamental aspects of supervising these types of new road projects.
In a traffic accident case, a local injury attorney may look carefully at how new projects were implemented and whether any type of negligence or inattention to public safety contributed to an accident. It’s all part of doing thorough fact-finding and research to support a client’s case in court, ensuring the client has every option afforded to them under the law.
Adjusting to Traffic Changes
Adding traffic infrastructure is important in busy urban areas; but sometimes, certain safety problems stay off the radar until they result in unfortunate accidents.
With any new traffic situation, public planners and others should look out for situations where these new traffic flow patterns may be confusing to motorists. For example, in opening new roads in somewhat rural areas, the intrusion of wildlife and other factors should be evaluated. It’s also important to provide all necessary signage to educate newcomers about how they can navigate these local roads.
