Despite an extensive increase in the number of miles logged by drivers on America’s roads, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that American traffic fatalities in 2010 dropped to the lowest level since 1949. The NHTSA attributes this drop, which is part of an ongoing trend over the past several years, to increased promotion of traffic safety laws, high visibility enforcement of those laws, improved public awareness of traffic safety, and rigorous vehicle safety programs. In Virginia, which is part of the states comprising the Mid-Atlantic region, traffic fatalities in 2010 decreased 4.7% from 2009. Hopefully this promising trend will continue as technology, awareness, and enforcement of traffic laws continues to occur.
