A new initiative by the Albemarle County Office of Emergency Management aims to help educate residents about fire safety, natural disasters and more.
The program, which is called Community Emergency Response Team Training, is a nine-week course running from March 12 to May 7, held at 6:30 to 9 PM every Thursday night.
In this course, community members will get some of the same types of information that first responders use to manage emergencies well. Elements of this include search-and-rescue protocols and emergency medical care, as well as the organization of emergency resources. According to the office’s web site:
“CERT is a positive and realistic approach to emergency and disaster situations recognized that citizens will be initially on their own and their actions can make a difference.”
This free training will allow residents to better understand how to pitch in when a first responder isn’t around to help with all sorts of emergencies that may affect a community.
