New reports in the Daily Progress show Charlottesville planners looking at the use of school bus cameras on local roads, with state planners weighing in on the logistics of maintaining such safety programs.
School bus safety is a big issue all over the country. These vehicles hold some of our most precious resources — our children – and carry them from home to school and back again every week. In Virginia, different cities and localities have looked at using cameras to catch vehicles that don’t comply with slow-stop signals from the special stop sign and warning light equipment on school buses. Such drivers put kids in danger, and they must be stopped. However, new recent changes to law enforcement practices may end up decreasing the use of school bus cameras across the state.
As Charlottesville leaders, including the Albemarle County School Board and Board of Supervisors, look at initiating a camera program in Albemarle County, they’re concerned about specific rules that have led places like Fairfax and other northern Virginia communities to drop their school bus camera programs. Specifically, the big detail in question involves whether or not police departments can issue summonses for school bus camera violations in the mail or not.

Most officials say that making police deliver the summonses by hand would be too labor intensive and not feasible for municipalities. So the future of school bus camera programs really hinges on this aspect of the program. Local leaders have asked the state attorney general to look at the issue and that office reported that the Virginia General Assembly never gave police direct authority to issue the summonses by mail. However, the state law allows these mailed citations for red light cameras.
Legislators are looking at whether they can change the law to include the same processes for school bus cameras, but at this point, the future of these safety programs is uncertain.
Local central Virginia injury lawyers know all too well how vital these types of safety protocols are. They understand traffic issues like school bus safety and their related risks to the community. They represent families who have been harmed by speeders and out of control motorists, as well as other parties who were negligent or failed to pay attention to public health and safety.
Injury victims rely on legal professionals to speak for them in central Virginia courts and help get them compensation for their injuries. Injury lawyers evaluate what safety rules are in place in a given community as part of bringing federal, state and local law to bear on a case, looking at case precedent and explaining what’s “reasonable” or “normal” in Central VA courts.
