Going through recent editions of the Daily Progress, you’re likely to come up with some of the seasonal news that reminds us that we’re nearly at the time of year when we have to take caution in inclement weather.
A recent story talks about the Virginia Department of Transportation preparing for winter weather by hoarding salt and sand to address snowstorms and ice on the roads.
A site near the airport has 12,000 tons of these materials, and state officials are hoping that this year, regional road crews don’t run out.
“This is definitely going to increase our capabilities and proficiency throughout the whole corridor,” said James Greis, Albemarle and Greene counties VDOT maintenance operations manager. “It just makes a quicker turnaround.”
Officials have also stocked up on a substance called calcium chloride that can work at extremely low temperatures when salt doesn’t work quickly enough.
The rest of the story talks about municipal budgets and offers more on winter weather strategy. But these reports are more than just notification that government agencies are working to keep people safe. They’re a reminder that different sorts of premises liability issues are also likely to pop up as well.
How an Attorney Can Help
Personal injury lawyers understand the seasonal cycle. They know that when things get icy, collisions and accidents happen, and many such cases are handled in local courts. They are aware of the issues associated with premises liability law in their communities, as well as what will cause liability for a business or other party.
In general, common sense applies — business owners and those maintaining public spaces need to plow snow, put down salt on the walkways and generally de-ice open spaces where people are regularly accessing buildings or public areas. But there’s the question of exactly how far premises liability goes, and that’s something that often gets hashed out in court or between different members of local law firms.
Slip and fall victims or any other types of injury victims need qualified injury lawyers that know where those lines are. They need professional attorneys who will listen and let them know what their legal options are. They need attorneys who will correctly utilize the law and case precedent. Injured individuals rely on legal professionals to help them negotiate outcomes to a case that are fair and equitable. People need lawyers all year long — but when someone slips and falls and sustains injuries in certain public areas, they need them immediately, and they need them to be competent and dedicated to the case.
